The Highland Council Waste Team are encouraging people to give quality unwanted items a new home by donating to a good cause. Passing your stuff on to be used by someone else is a great way to help out family and friends or support a local charity. It's also great for the environment as it keeps things out of landfill.

There are many re-use and charity stores across the region that sell donated items to support a good cause in the local area, and many of them also help people back into work.

The sort of things to donate include quality clothing, shoes (pairs), books, furniture, soft furnishings (with fire tags) bikes, prams (with fire tags), toys and homeware. They are also a great place to pick up amazing bargains and in turn support local charities.

Local stores Blythswood, Newstart Highland and Everything Baby are all Revolve accredited which means their stores have met a quality standard that you can trust.

Councillor Allan Henderson, Chair of Community Service said: Landfilling waste costs the Council about £150 per tonne and last year just over 70,000 tonnes of household waste ended up in landfill so it is in all our interests to think about what we are throwing away.

"When you are having a clear out at home, whether it's the kids bedroom or in the attic don't forget to separate out the items that can be taken to your local re-use and charity store. Most of the Highland Council Recycling Centres also have reuse containers for you to drop off your good quality unwanted items so it couldn't be easier. Please remember to separate your items for reuse before arriving at a Recycling Centre to save you time at the site."
